Rally Sweden har som första motorsportarrangemang tilldelats utmärkelsen Progress Towards Excellence av det internationella bilsportförbundet, FIA.
– Rally Sweden har visat ett starkt miljöengagemang genomgående i organisationen. Tävlingen har satt nivån andra motorsportarrangemang har att mäta sig emot, säger FIA Institutes president, Gerard Saillant.
Progress Towards Excellence är nivå två av tre i FIA Institutes Miljöackrediteringsplan, ett riktat program som syftar till att förbättra miljömässig hållbarhet hos motorsport världen över. Programmet tillhandahåller ett ramverk för miljöarbete och jobbar för att medlemmar ska utveckla sitt miljöarbete.
– Som den styrande motorsportorganisationen välkomnar vi utvecklingen av FIA Institutes ackrediteringsstruktur inom området miljömedvetenhet. Rally Sweden har visat vägen och vi hoppas att andra arrangörer kommer att följa efter, säger FIA:s president Jean Todt.
– Vi är väldigt stolta över den här utmärkelsen. Att vara den första arrangören i världen att nå den här nivån visar på vår ambition att ligga i framkanten med vårt miljöarbete, säger Rally Swedens vd, Glenn Olsson.
Rally Sweden har lyft fram sitt miljöarbete via en etablerad miljöpolicy som presenterades för team, media, partners och tävlande. Arbetet under evenemanget stöttades av en av Sveriges största miljöåtervinningsföretag, SITA, som tillhandahöll verktygen för det praktiska arbetet under arrangemanget.
Dock finns det utrymme för förbättring och ledningen har uppmanats att utveckla och införa rutiner för att förstärka det dagliga miljöarbetet. Genom att göra detta skulle Rally Sweden ta ytterligare ett steg närmare den slutliga nivån, ”Achievement of Excellence”.
FIA:s arbete med hållbarhet inom motorsport, i samarbete med Michelin, är fokuserat på utvärdering, som tillsammans med hållbarhetsprogrammet utgör grunden för FIA:s miljöstrategi för alla områden inom motorsport.

The event was awarded with Progress Towards Excellence – the second of three levels in the Environmental Certification Framework.
The framework forms part of a broader initiative between the FIA and the FIA Institute aimed at evaluating and reducing the environmental impact of motor sport. Organisations that sign up are rated against three levels of environmental performance, so measuring their achievement and providing a benchmark against which to improve.
FIA President Jean Todt said: “As the governing body of motor sport, we welcome the development of the FIA Institute’s accreditation structure in the area of environmental accountability. Rally Sweden have shown the way and we hope a number of other event organisers will follow suit.”
FIA Institute President Gérard Saillant said: “Rally Sweden demonstrated a strong environmental commitment throughout its organisation. They have set a marker for other motor sport events to follow.”
Rally Sweden Managing Director Glenn Olsson said: “We are really proud to receive this award. Being the first motor sport organiser in the world to reach this level demonstrates our ambition to be at the forefront of environmental performance.”
Organisers demonstrated the event’s environmental management through an entrenched environmental policy that is highlighted in all official documents for teams, media, organising partners, and competitors. The work on the event was helped by support from one of Sweden’s biggest environmental contractors SITA, which is located close to the Rally Sweden headquarters and gave access to the best possible tools to manage practical work during the event.
However, it was noted that there is room for improvement, with senior management encouraged to develop and implement internal procedures and routines to reinforce their day-to-day environmental commitments. It was also highlighted that Rally Sweden could influence the supply chain and challenge their key suppliers to improve their own environmental performance. The implementation of this would help Rally Sweden move towards the ultimate ”Achievement of Excellence” level.
